Handler Training Courses
Our basic course class sizes are small, which ensures quality instruction, more repetitions and more advanced behaviors.
5 Weeks
Basic Patrol Course
K9 teams will learn on and off leash obedience, including off-leash tactical obedience. Teams will be prepared for street deployments in building searches, area searches, vehicle extractions and handler protection. Scenturion K9 Consulting instills the highest levels of control, so you can be confident that your teams are prepared for anything they encounter on the street. All teams will be certified at standards that meet or exceed California POST prior to the completion of the course.
4-6 Weeks
Basic Detection Course
K9 teams will undergo obedience training and be imprinted with the specific odors selected by your agency. At Scenturion K9 Consulting, we imprint and train using real odors to ensure operational readiness. Teams will learn to search diverse environments, including vehicles, buildings, parcels, and open areas, both at our training facility and in off-site locations. All teams will be certified to meet or exceed California POST standards before completing the course.
2 weeks
Scent Discriminant Tracking Course
K9 teams will be taught to search for and locate a specific person utilizing a scent article. Teams will learn to track on grass, dirt, vegetation, cement and asphalt surfaces. They will negotiate multiple turns, various terrain and real-world distractions by tracking through public areas and real-world environments.
Other Courses
Decoy Course – 1 Day
Students will start the day in a classroom setting, where they will learn basics of dog behavior and training theory, including the drives most used in Police Service Dog training, as well as Classical and Operant Conditioning. Students will spend the rest of the day using various pieces of equipment to work with dogs and learn various skills and techniques. Among the many things taught during this course, students will learn how to take bites on different areas of the body, how to muzzle fight, and how to communicate goals, objectives and behaviors with trainers and handlers.
2-3 Days
Supervision/Management Course
This comprehensive course covers everything from starting up a K9 program or adding a position, through handler selection, dog selection, establishing culture and handler training. Through use of video review, discussion and case studies, students will learn how to build a unit of reliable, well-trained handlers who make solid, fact-based decisions and mitigate agency liability, all while functioning at the highest levels of proficiency. This course will be taught by an instructor with 17+ years of experience supervising and managing a K9 unit, and is a must for sergeants, lieutenants and senior handlers.
1 Day
Training Session Planning Course
Geared toward handlers who train in groups that are not supervised by a trainer, students will learn how to plan, structure and document a goal-oriented, efficient and effective training session. Troubleshooting and problem-solving common problems will be discussed and students will work together to generate a sample training plan.
Monthly Maintenance Training Sessions
1-2 Days per month
Agency-Specific Monthly Maintenance
Scenturion K9 Consulting will work with your agency to establish a monthly training program based on your agency needs. Training sessions may be combined with other agencies to make the most efficient use of time and expose handlers to other teams, tactics and strategies. All disciplines your K9 team is trained in will be covered in each session. Sessions may take place at the Fontana Police K9 Training Center or in your city or community. Pricing may change based on training location and number of sessions.
